A MUSEUM FOR ALL:
Accessibility at the Kölnisches Stadtmuseum
When planning the new museum, one of the crucial goals was a barrier-free architecture and an inclusive presentation of the exhibits.
In the following, you will find the key data on accessibility.
For walking-impaired people
Entrance and lifts
The entrance to the museum is at ground level and equipped with an automatically opening door.
All floors and sanitary facilities are accessible by lift; the function buttons are easily accessible to wheelchair users.
Seating options
Lightweight, handy folding chairs are available free of charge. There are also numerous seating areas in the museum.
In the exhibition and in the foyer
You can drive your wheelchair up to the cashier so you can speak face-to-face with your knees comfortably under the register. This accessibility also applies to many presentations in the exhibition.
For people with visual impairments
There are many ways for those visually impaired to experience the history of the city in the new museum. Tactile floor guidelines lead to the entrance door, the cash desk, the cloakroom, the sanitary facilities and through all exhibition areas. There are tactile overview plans on all floors for orientation. People who are blind or visually impaired may bring an assistance dog into the museum.
The multimedia guide offers a specially adapted tour for people with visual impairments, which includes audio-descriptive elements as well as comments. In addition, all crucial exhibition texts also appear in Braille.
We’ve also developed a special option for visually impaired people: many exhibits proclaim “Feel free to touch!”
All exhibition texts are supplemented by audio-descriptive elements and are also available for download as accessible documents.
For people with hearing impairments
The checkout counter is equipped with an inductive hearing system. The multimedia guide offers videos in German sign language.
Simple language
Soon, the multimedia guide will also be offering a guided tour of the highlights in simple language.
