Pop-up bar with concerts, DJs, open stage… and the bar exhibition 1848 REVOLUTION IN KÖLN

March 17 – April 29, 2023
Thurs. to Sat., 5 to 10 p.m
.

At the back of the new museum location
(entrance via Kolumbahof 3)

The Kölnische Stadtmuseum commemorates this time of barricade fighting with the pop-up bar “BAR/RIKADE”: look forward to a free event program – from concerts and DJ parties to revolutionary song recitals and open-stage activities. Right in the middle: the bar exhibition “1848 Revolution in Köln”.

Spring
Thousands protest for democratic rights, led by the poor doctor Andreas Gottschalk and the labor leader Fritz Anneke. Communists Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels are also active in Cologne.

Summer
Entrepreneurs demand civil rights and free trade. Democratically minded people like Franz Raveaux or Robert Blum are more radical, they want the republic, the rule of the people without monarchs.

Mathilde Franziska Anneke is a pioneer of the women’s movement. In Cologne, vigilantes march under black-red-gold flags.
Democratic leftists even wave the first red flag for the social republic.

Fall
Radical democrats set up barricades in Alter Markt in late September. The military intervenes: Cologne’s citizens* must hand in all their weapons.

Winter
The revolution is crushed – as in Cologne in 1848, so throughout Europe in 1849. Those involved are sentenced in the Cologne Communist Trial of 1852 or flee into exile. Many go to the USA, where they fight against slavery in the Civil War.

What remains?
But their legacy still moves us today. The exhibition also reminds us of this: the constitution of the Paulskirche Parliament becomes the model for the Weimar Republic. The first democratic constitution for Germany is created in the Paulskirche. However, the path of compromise is taken and the decision is made not for a “radical democracy” but for a “constitutional monarchy. After 1945, the mothers and fathers of the Basic Law continued the ideals of 1848.

Rudelbildung – the quiz for soccer rebels!

With Stefan Staub and Simon Augsten

Thur. 23.03. | 8 p.m.

Their home is called “Gottes Grüne Wiese”. One of Cologne’s most popular soccer pubs in the middle of the Belgian quarter. Every first Monday of the month, Stefan Staub and Simon Augsten organize their imaginative and original soccer quiz “Rudelbildung” here. It has become such a hit that the pub is as full on quiz days as it is during the Champions League. Today, for the first time, Rudelbildung is taking place away from home. And the question categories are being expanded to match the exhibition theme. So it’s also about soccer rebels and soccer in revolutionary times.

From 5 p.m.: Kreisliga-Pop with DJ Pelevision

Die alten Barrikaden

Revolutionary songs to sing along in German, French and Kölsch, with Roland Hüve, Laurent Chevalier and Mario Kramp.

Fri. 24.03. | 7 p.m.

A guided tour of the exhibition – combined with revolutionary songs. In German, in Kölsch and in French. To sing along. Also for those who speak little French – song texts will be distributed in the audience…
The German-French-Kölsch trio caused a sensation at the exhibition DÄ DEJOOL KÜTT. The three are back! Just in time for the riot. Which, after all, took place in Cologne in 1848 in the middle of Carnival. Revolution is great – but disturbs in the middle of the session…
So the citizens’ song is accompanied by the Trömmelche. I wonder what it sounded like when the Cologne revolutionaries sang Freiligrath’s “Reveille” to the tune of the Marseillaise in the Gürzenich? Or the “Trotz alledem”, in the version printed by Marx in the Neue Rheinische Zeitung? Unser Fahn’ es ruud – before and after 1848: Brecht and Weill pose the basic question “What does man live on?” in the Threepenny Opera. While the Beatles sing of “revolution” in 1968, Biermann demands “You, don’t let yourself harden”. Solidarity everywhere – not only in our Veedel: Ça ira!

Protest! Mean songs from the street

A protest song program by Klaus the Violinist and Marco Pankow

Thur. 20.04. | 7 p.m.

Klaus der Geiger has been making music since the mid-1960s and is a proud 83 years old in 2023. Marco Pankow from Heiter bis Wolkig has been making music and cabaret since 1982. Both met in the late 1980s in the swamp of Cologne’s subculture in Südstadt – and since then their musical paths have crossed again and again. Now the two are making common cause. They sing – fully acoustic and unplugged – mean and nasty street songs from Klaus’ repertoire and other sources of snotty asphalt culture. Political songwriting according to the motto of Klaus the violinist: “I didn’t put up with anything (…) no servant among us and no master over us!”.

KLEE – Trotzalledem! Love is my rebellion

Pop with clever German lyrics (exclusive concert with small line-up)

Sat. 22.04. | 8 p.m.

How can you sing about love without falling into kitsch or pathos? And how do you celebrate its revolutionary power? Suzie Kerstgens and Sten Servaes know both. They have been making music together since the late nineties. First they conquered their first fans under the band name Ralley with driving guitar pop and wonderful lyrics on the great amorous theme. Then they dared to take a bold step: Ralley became Klee and thus began the stylistic shift towards electro-pop. The courage was rewarded and the indie band turned into an act for charts, TV and radio. Today there is a concert with a special line-up, a unique chance to experience the band in a completely different guise.

Optimal

Electropunk pop duo

Thur. 27.04. | 7 p.m.

We are optimal. You are optimal. We are optimal! With this friendly mantra the two storm visionaries Fabian Wahrscheinlich & Manuel Automatik usually greet their dancing audience. Sure. The brothers, who grew up in the tranquil Morkepütz, create and shape their dadaistic sound art together. Somewhere between slick pop steam hammer and tricky Säuselei. The common thread: With heart. Without filter. Intoxicatingly fat or hard disturbing. Goosebumps or question marks. Clear.
